Stages Of Gum Disease in Phoenix, AZ

Brushing and flossing your teeth every day needs to be a high priority, because good oral hygiene can reduce the risk of gum disease. An estimated 75 percent of Americans have some form of gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, and studies show that periodontal disease may also be linked to a number of health problems and diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer. Here is a closer look at the three main stages of gum disease:

Stages of Gum Disease Phoenix, AZ

Stage 1: Gingivitis

The first stage of periodontal disease is caused by plaque buildup around the gum line. It does not take long for this plaque to cause inflammation of the gums, and you might experience bleeding gums or find your gums are very red and swollen as a result. If you neglect to brush and floss your teeth every day, you may develop gingivitis. Fortunately, this condition can be reversed because the bone and fibers have not yet been affected.

Stage 2: Periodontitis

If you do not get the treatment you need to resolve gingivitis, it will develop into periodontitis. At this stage, the bone and fibers that hold your teeth in place will have become irreversibly damaged. Your gums will begin to form pockets around the teeth, and this is where even more bacteria will thrive. Gums will start to recede and you might see gaps forming between your teeth. At this stage, immediate treatment is necessary to prevent tooth loss.

Stage 3: Advanced Periodontitis

When the early stages of periodontitis are left untreated, bacteria will grow and spread even more quickly and cause more destruction of the connective tissue and bone supporting the teeth. The pockets formed in Stage 2 will become even deeper, and you might start to feel your teeth becoming loose or shifting. Aggressive treatment is necessary to restore the mouth to a better state of health.
