Bone Grafting in Phoenix, AZ
If you have lost one or more teeth because of decay, trauma, or injury, or health problems, the bone around the missing tooth will start to deteriorate. Dr. Ronald Watkins may recommend a bone graft procedure at your dental implant consultation in Paradise Valley, AZ. Bone grafting restores the lost bone and improves the health and functioning of the jaw. If you need dental implants and do not have enough bone to support the implant, you may need to undergo a bone graft procedure before implant placement.

Types of Bone Grafting Procedures

There are three main types of bone graft procedures: autogenous, allograft, and xenograft.

  • Autogeneous Grafts - The bone is taken from one area of your body, such as the chin, and transplanted to the mouth. The bone is still “live” and has active cellular material, so there is less likelihood of rejection or infection.

  • Allografts - The bone is taken from a cadaver that has donated their bone to a bone bank. The bone material is screened for safety before transplantation.

  • Xenografts - The bone is from a non-human source such as a cow. Like allografts, the bone is screened for safety before the bone graft procedure is performed.

How the Bone Graft Procedure is Performed

Dr. Watkins typically uses local anesthesia to numb the areas where the bone will be removed and transplanted. He will make an incision in the gums around the bone that will be receiving the graft, and then cut in the gums below the lower front teeth in order to remove a part of the chin bone along with bone marrow. The small incision is then closed up with stitches.

The bone removed from the chin is then anchored in place in the jawbone with small, titanium screws. Dr. Watkins may place a mixture of your own bone marrow and some bone-grafting material to speed up the healing process. The incision is closed with stitches. You will need to take antibiotics and pain medication as you heal, and eat a diet of soft foods. We typically wait about six to nine months for the tissue to heal completely before dental implant placement.
