Sedation in Phoenix, AZIf you are fearful about going to the periodontist but know that you need treatment, talk with Dr. Ronald Watkins at AZ Implant Solutions about sedation dentistry. We offer different sedation methods to meet your needs and help you relax during your dental procedures. Through the use of sedation, we can ensure a more comfortable, anxiety free experience. We understand that the idea of having dental treatment can cause fear and anxiety, but sedation dentistry allows us to manage moderate to severe dental anxiety through the use of oral sedation, nitrous oxide in combination with a local anesthetic, or intravenous (IV) sedation.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation involves a sedative medication taken by mouth prior to the dental appointment. It allows for a relaxed experience by reducing the patient’s response to external stimuli, such as sounds, sights, and smells. The pain response is also reduced, ensuring a more comfortable treatment experience. Dr. Watkins will determine the best type of medication for oral sedation on individualized basis.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is an odorless, colorless gas that is inhaled just prior to and during the procedure. It is often used in combination with a local anesthetic. The patient experiences a sense of euphoria, which calms and relaxes the patient before and during their treatment. Once the procedure is complete and the gas has been turned off, the patient returns to normal and is able to resume normal activities.

Intravenous (IV) Conscious Sedation

IV Conscious Sedation is one of the effective techniques that we use in sedation dentistry to manage dental anxiety and is the deepest level of sedation that we can attain without general anesthesia. This technique helps the patient enjoy a state of complete relaxation during the procedure, something that they would not have been able to experience otherwise because of their fears and anxiety. Prior to the procedure, we administer drugs through an IV, and Dr. Watkins can control exactly how much is administered directly into the bloodstream. During the procedure, we will place monitoring devices on you to monitor your heart rate, blood oxygen levels, blood pressure, and breathing.

You will be awake during the entire procedure so that you are still able to follow Dr. Watkins’ directions and instructions. However, the medications that we use will leave you with some amnesia about the procedure so it is unlikely that you will remember much from your experience in the chair.

Only some periodontal professionals are trained and certified to perform sedation dentistry procedures using IV Conscious Sedation. Dr. Watkins has completed the specialized advanced training to provide this service, and is also certified by the state Board of Dental Examiners.
