How to Cut the Risk of Dental Implant Failure before Getting Implants

Posted on 10/15/2023 by Ronald Watkins
African American woman smiling with her new dental implants from Implant and Periodontal Wellness Center of Arizona in Phoenix, AZImplant technology in the dental field has seen crazy advancements over the last couple of years with an estimated success rate of 95%. Dental implant advancements have made it possible for you to walk into our offices with a problematic tooth and walk right out with a new one. Sadly, this feat is not possible with all dental scenarios.

A dental implant consists of a titanium post that is positioned surgically into the jawbone beneath the line of the gum. This allows us to position a bridge or replacement tooth into that area. Unlike dentures, oral implants do not get loose. As much as the success rates of implants are high, sometimes a dental implant might fail even after proper planning and placement. This may be caused by rejection, infection, or mechanical problems.

How to Minimize Risks

Before any implant surgery, it is your responsibility to make sure any existing oral condition is treated and managed. Proper oral hygiene should be maintained; brush your teeth at least twice daily and floss once a day. Proper oral hygiene reduces the risk of failure in dental implants. If there is an infection at the implant site, you will only experience more complications. If you have damaged teeth or an issue with your gums, we advise you to wait for them to heal before deciding to put in dental implants. Failure to do so can lead to further damage, pain, and numbness. It is important to consult with us before getting an implant.

What to Expect From an Implant

Implant surgery has many stages. It is an outpatient surgery. It allows healing time between the procedures. The process might involve a couple of steps. First, the damaged tooth is removed and the jawbone is grafted if need be. Later on, the dental implant is placed and some time is allocated to allow the bone to grow and heal. After that, the abutment placement begins followed by the tooth replacement.

This process can take months to finish because your jawbones need time to grow and heal. In case you are looking forward to getting a dental implant, book an appointment with us today to keep your smile bright.
