Air Polisher
Periodontist Phoenix, AZ

A female patient in a dental chair being examined at Implant and Periodontal Wellness Center of Arizona in Phoenix, AZ.Designed for anyone who cringes at the prospect of the hygienist using scraping tools to dig into their gums, or having a polishing disc sand at their enamel, the air polisher is a welcome change. At Implant and Periodontal Wellness Center of Arizona, we use the air polisher because it is a fast, painless, and noninvasive tool that will remove stains and clean your teeth and gums. Our hygienist, along with Ronald Watkins, DDS, MS, works hard to provide our patients with the best in oral care, using the tools that bring the most comfort to the patient while providing them the maximum in health education and services.

Air polishing is a technique that has been around for quite a while but is rarely used in most dental offices because in the past it was considered a messy, complicated technique that kids hated. With technological advances, the aspects that patients hated have been adjusted, and the difference in the work is profound. With many dental offices still not up to date on these changes, we feel like it’s our secret weapon, and what sets our office apart.

This new and innovative air polishing technique both cleans and polishes by combining the power of streaming water and compressed air that blasts fine powder particles at your teeth and gums. The powerful jet of water followed by air and powder removes plaque, not only from the teeth, but also from the periodontal gum pockets up to a depth of 5 mm, removes soft calcium deposits, and polishes the surface of the teeth whitening them from surface stains. The abrasive force of the powder provides a beautiful polish. This method has been found to be far superior to standard cleaning methods, which includes scraping tools, rubber cups and then polishing discs. We can perform all three tasks at once.

Patients love the benefits that come from having their teeth air polished, the benefits include:
•  Clean Deep Pockets: A standard feature in most adult dental cleanings is the cleaning of gum pockets. Plaque, tartar, and calculus build up along the rim of our teeth and gums, and can at times extend below the gumline. This bacteria filled material needs to be removed to avoid infection. The air polisher can blast away plaque, tartar and calculus from even deep periodontal pockets, up to 5 mm.
•  No Heat or Vibration: Heat and vibration is an uncomfortable feeling, and we understand. The air polisher tool never comes in contact with your teeth, only the water, air, and powder do, so you will not feel the heat or vibration of the tool.
•  Powder: The non-toxic powder that is used while air polishing is more pleasant than the gritty paste that is used in traditional polishing. Additionally, the powders used today come in flavors such as spearmint, making the experience even more pleasant for the patient.
•  Safe for Orthodontics and Prosthetics: The air polisher can be used safely to clean and polish even when the patient is wearing braces or has a prosthetic such as a crown, bridge, veneers, or a dental implant.
