Bar Attachment Denture

Traditionally, when you lost an entire arch of teeth, your only option for replacement were dentures. These removable prosthetic teeth present several problems for most patients. They can slip out of place, causing painful sores and embarrassment. They require tedious care every night. Moreover, they need to be replaced every few years to accommodate changes in your jawbone. Dentures are no longer the only answer. At Implant and Periodontal Wellness Center of Arizona, we can provide you with dental implants, the latest tooth replacement option. One implant option offered is a bar attachment denture.

What Is a Bar Attachment Denture?

An alternative to traditional dentures, a bar attachment denture is a type of dental implant, usually used to replace an entire arch of missing teeth. The implants are placed at an angle, which provides for optimal support, and a titanium bar is then attached to them. Your permanent teeth are then attached to the bar, which provides them with a stable support network. These teeth are not removed and can be cared for just like your natural teeth, which can save you a significant amount of time and hassle every night.

Bar Attachment Vs. Regular Dental Implants

Usually, patients receiving dental implants are given 6 to 8 per arch. A bar attachment denture, on the other hand, relies on only 4 implants. Also, with regular dental implants, your false teeth are attached to abutments on the implants. With a bar attachment denture, the false teeth are attached to the bar, which is attached to the implants.

Patients who receive regular dental implants often require several visits over the course of healing, which could take upwards of 6 months. After the implants are placed, you go home with a set of temporary teeth to use while you heal. You receive your permanent teeth after you have healed. With bar attachment dentures, your permanent false teeth are set during the same visit, saving you the trouble of those additional visits.

Benefits of a Bar Attachment Denture

Bar attachment dentures have similar benefits to regular dental implants. They provide a permanent solution that is much more convenient and comfortable than traditional dentures. They also help to save the integrity of your jawbone. However, there are a few additional benefits as well:
•  Since only 4 implants per arch are required, you undergo less surgery.
•  Less surgery means a faster healing time.
•  Teeth are placed immediately.
•  With 4 implants, as opposed to 6 or 8, the cost of bar attachment dentures is much less than regular dental implants.
•  Because of the way the implants are placed (the back two being placed at an angle), ensuring that they are anchored properly, you are much less likely to require a bone graft. This makes bar attachment dentures an option for those who might not have enough bone mass for regular dental implants.

Are You a Candidate for Bar Attachment Dentures?

Candidates for bar attachment dentures are those who are in overall good health. If you smoke, you must be willing to quit, at least until your healing is complete. You may have had traditional dentures in the past, and are tired of them slipping out of place and causing you pain. You may not be eligible for regular dental implants due to some bone loss, but are still looking for an alternative to traditional dentures.
