Cavitron Scalers
Phoenix, AZ

An ultrasonic scaler at Implant and Periodontal Wellness Center of Arizona in Phoenix, AZWhen you have gum disease, you need professional treatment. While early stages can be reversed with at-home oral care, more advanced stages need specialized care, a treatment known as scaling and root planing. At Implant and Periodontal Wellness Center of Arizona, we perform scaling with an ultrasonic scaler known as a Cavitron scaler.

What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is a progressive condition. It starts as gingivitis and is often unnoticed. Symptoms such as irritated, inflamed gums that bleed when you brush or floss are often thought to be the cause of brushing too hard. As gum disease progresses, your gums pull away from your teeth, and bacteria fall into the pockets that are created. The plaque under the gumline hardens into tartar, further irritating your gum tissue. At this stage, it becomes impossible to treat without professional intervention.

Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is a procedure designed to clean the surfaces of your teeth, as well as your roots, ridding them of plaque, tartar, and bacteria, along with other contaminants and toxins. By doing this, your gums are given a chance to heal.

Using the Cavitron Scaler

Traditionally, scaling has been performed with a metal tool. While effective at removing stubborn tartar, a metal scaler can be painful, especially around already irritated gum tissue. Technological advances have produced ultrasonic scalers, such as the Cavitron scaler, to perform the job with significantly less discomfort.

The Cavitron scaler relies on piezo-electric technology. Operating with low-frequency soundwaves, the tip of scaler moves back and forth at a rate of 28,000 to 36.000 cycles per second, vibrating against the surfaces of your teeth to remove tartar and other buildup. The scaler can also rinse under the gumline, either with water or an antimicrobial agent, which is more convenient than trying to manually scrape your teeth and operate a separate sprayer.

Benefits of Ultrasonic Scaling

The Cavitron scaler, and ultrasonic scaling technology has greatly improved our ability to more efficiently remove tartar buildup from your teeth. With a more thorough cleaning, your gums are better able to heal. This scaler offers you numerous benefits:
•  We can clean your teeth faster. You spend less time in the dentist's chair and are on your way with very little disruption in your day.
•  Ultrasonic scalers are more efficient at removing plaque and tartar buildup.
•  With the ability to spray through the tip of the scaler, it is easier to rinse the buildup out from under your gums as we remove it from the surfaces of your teeth.
•  We can more effectively administer an antimicrobial agent under the gums, which helps to kill off any lingering bacteria.
•  Ultrasonic scalers are much less irritating to your already sensitive gum tissue.
•  Ultrasonic scalers have an additional benefit: as they clean your teeth of tartar, they also scrape off surface stains. Not only is your gum disease treated, but your teeth may appear whiter when we are finished.

If you have gum disease, scaling and root planing can be an effective treatment to stop its progression, allowing your gums to heal. Call Implant and Periodontal Wellness Center of Arizona to learn more about the Cavitron scaler and to schedule your consultation today.
